Mount Nokogiri 「鋸山」: Yakushirurikonyorai「薬師瑠璃光如来」

If you followed our steps from the previous post, the stairs led to this amazingly huge stone buddha, which is the real star of the day.


The Nihonji Daibutsu (Great Buddha of Nihonji temple) is called Yakushirurikonyorai 「薬師瑠璃光如来」. He represents the entire space. He is the pure land, and leads the world to the peace and safe. With 31m high and peaceful sitting position, this is the biggest Daibutsu in Japan. Original statue was built in 1783. But around the end of Edo period, it was damaged by humidity and rebuilt by 1969.



The are is surrounded by cherry trees and other altar, like this which was packed with tiny figurines of standing buddhas, dressed on the holy red hats.

I am a sucker for Buddhas, so let's go through this one in detail.

Temples keep popping along the way. This one, is to prevent people from danger 「危」. It's amazing how easy is to recall this particular kanji, as it pops all over the place (station, street refurbishment, gas...). But in a country where Earthquakes destroy cities, every now and then, safety is first (and do not disturb others, second).

And the holy rope, to protect the family.



We walked along rice fields, meeting the "very local old lady" who seems to be living in Vietnam (instead of a ride away of the biggest Metropolis on Earth).
