Tokyo city lights

Sometimes in life we have to decide, to stay, to move. Sometimes in life we wonder, how things will end up. Sometimes in life we make the mistake to bother about others, what if they fail to understand. Should not really matter as long as we stay true to the voice deep inside, that one we can clearly hear when we are alone at night.

There is too much purposeless jealous mediocrity in the world. People who lack strength to do anything and shift focus into dragging others down, as extremely draining dark holes of energy. I have come to appreciate that such attitude shows correlation with some underlying psychological issue - light depression, insecurity... - that they don't have the guts to acknowledge, address or overcome either.  Nobody is lazy by nature, they just failed to find enough motivation for whatever reason.

This kind of people typically fill with envy, while failing to apprehend that the true value of experiences, that magic which got you there, often originates from struggles which were dealt with consistency, patience and curiosity. That the outcome of dealing with challenges, even when not fully positive will at least result on some learning. Any experience is valuable, as long as you learn the lesson it was meant to teach you.

On the other side of the spectrum, I feel deeply inspired but people who try, who dare, who do. They are the engine that moves the World.

Experiences and knowledge are not easily portrayed by the camera or shared in instagram - pillar of our society of inspirational imagery but to me, these are the most valuable assets we can reach for. Nobody can take them away from us. That's maybe while writing is valuable to me, as self-reflection but also as means to share my experiences hoping for others to leverage from them. As humans, this is all we leave behind right? Memories.

Today marks 2 years since my father left us all of the sudden, with a heart-stroke at his favourite beach.

Rest in peace, he was not an easy person, his soul partly broken by all the difficulties that he had to go through since early age. Back in the 1940s life was not exactly easy for a post-war half-orphan half-literate child from a tiny village in Galicia.

My father taught me the importance of the ability to look at ourselves from an outside-in perspective. It's key to achieve balance and success. Schools hardly train us in soft-skills or psychology, but I strongly believe it is critical to develop a way to understand and deal with our personality, as first step to manage and anticipate everyone else, of course. Both valuable in business and in life.

His life proves that anything is possible as long as you are committed to it, but that does not mean it will be easy...  Growth and comfort never coexist.

Miss Amy vs me

Recap

Noble Reflex - My home in Bangkok

costa boda make up collection

Me he adaptado muy bien a Bangkok.

English
Following the tradition of giving you a sneak peek into our expat homes around the world (see Södermalm, Stockholm and Daikanyama, Tokyo if you missed them), here comes a small video of my apartment in Ari, Bangkok. My container was finally delivered on Wednesday. After spending Friday night and Saturday unpacking, putting everything in place, I'm done - rather happy with the result. Before moving here, I had this vision of creating a SO EXTRA space, from which I would clear the posting backlog - someone asking about Stockholm tips made me realize I have not managed to share the routes we worked on back in April, summery days in Tokyo, the long Costa Rica escape, the amazing temples of Cambodia or half my Melbourne insights - while keeping up with a healthy-yet-fabulous lifestyle.

I've been following the Bikini Body Guide for a month now - started from week 10-12 though. This helped me sleep well again while dropping my body fat by 1kg since February - at least according to my smart scale, just unpacked.

Livet leker as the Swedes say, here in Bangkok. Grocery shopping is straight forward and delivered home for 1€. Colleagues are kind and cheeky. Besides the gym, the pool and some friends to hang out, I have found my go-to nail salon, my eyebrow spot, my dance school and my favourite clothing brand.

Just looking forward for some friends and fam to come over... Here's a teaser!

Expat home in Bangkok - chapter II

The Second Epiphany

Expat home in Bangkok - chapter I

Home away from home

The notion of home
Home is represented by very different ideas depending on who you ask. For those who never left, it is the place where they grew up and stayed, often where the majority of their family, friends and even more distant relatives are. For regular expats, home is typically where the job, friends (at least a subset of them), partner and kids are. The latter is more of an abstract concept, that relates more with the activity than with the physical location. In the past, that's what home was for me. The place where Enrique is, where we work and live together.

Our life in Málaga made me question that concept quite often, as he would not be there on average, for 6 months a year. This summer I had a fun realization, that it felt more home in the tiny apartment of Seoul than the rest of 2017 - he was in Sweden, I was ping-pong between Europe and Asia on weekly basis. Our life in Gangnam was nowhere ideal but, we had each other, on daily basis.

Through the starting of my new life in Bangkok, I am once again reconsidering the concept of home. When hearing with the fun weekend plans with the Spanish and friends in Bangkok, Enrique told me that this seemed like my second Erasmus, which made me realize how lucky I am to be given the chance again (but on my 30s) to have some time on my own, when I can explore who I am, what drives me, what makes me happy. To process this variety of experiences in the silence provided by living alone. Distance relationships are often seen negatively by the society, when in fact it is many of us in this kind of situation (I can count 4 friends who have their hubby in another city). While the transition from being a normal couple into one geographically split is tough, spending time alone eventually provides a chance to shut down the world, take care of yourself in a deeper level. It also makes you give the apppropriate value to the moments spent together for the magic time they are. The true realization of the the volatility of life allows you to live fully.

From the psychological, into the physical home
One of my colleagues was extremely suprised to hear that I was moving to Bangkok "despite having renovated my apartment during the summer". The irony of destiny.

We bought our apartment in Malaga towards the end of 2014, when having some issues with the landlord - I ended up in court as the building owner was not paying back the loan to the landlord, meaning that all of us tenants were at risk of being kicked out as soon as the trial was over - and a hard time to find rental apartments in Málaga which we liked and could meet our budget. Back then it felt like jumping from the top of a cliff, but after completing the major changes - installing the stairs, changing all the hideous brown wood by white walls and concrete floors - we were both happy with the decision. The apartment was instrumental for Málaga to start feeling like home. There was one thing missing though, which was the terrace. It was not very pleasant and we had water leakage under heavy rain, which is more common than you probably think in Málaga. We converted a small pool into the dining area pictured, covered the walls with concrete and installed some ambient lightning. This took the whole month of June, brought me to the hospital (as I had a bronchitis crisis as it turns out I am allergic to concrete dust). But it was finally done, another great job of Adrian Scarrone and his company MDQ reformas (highly advisable if you want to fix your home in the area). When everything was ready, we left to Seoul for the summer. Soon after, I ended up here.

After a notable time, money and effort investment... I am back at square zero, as home-less being who has to battle the real estate market of Bangkok - alone for the first time. As I noted quite some curiosity by those of you who also follow me on instagram and found it extremely useful to read online about the experiences of fellow expats, I decided to write a mini series of posts this week, to capture what it takes to find an apartment in Bangkok.

Seoul - Gyeonbokgung「

Gyeongbokgung Palace
Gyeonbokgung「경복궁」was built in 1395. As the main palace of the Kingdom of Joseon (1392-1897) , it is also the largest of the five grand palaces (Changdeokgung, Changgyeonggung, Deoksugung, Gyeongbokgung and Gyeonghuigung) that this 500 year period left behind. We are trying to cover them all, but they are huge, so it takes several weekends. Still, learning about the history between his walls actually unveils many interesting aspects of the Korean history, particularly about their relationship with Japan.

The huge site is colorful and varied. From the throne hall through the lake, the library, the living quarters or the center of the palace - where queens would give birth among "special energy", it is full of beautiful structures,  a pleasure to explore.

From the entire complex, it was Gonnyeonhap, the residence of Empress Myeongseong was the one which stroke me the most. The story between these walls made me look at Japan from a different angle. Currently open to the public, it leverages art installations and video to look back at her tragic history. It also puts in perspective the  the pain Korea was put through, over and over again in history, because of being caught between China and Japan.

Seoul - Samsung and Park

All that shines... Is not always full of light

DISCLAIMER: I don't consider myself an expert on local politics, just writing this post based on what I see on the streets and what I can read on international press.

Spending a slightly longer period in a new country gives you a chance to learn about their history, their culture and some of the current issues in the society. Before coming to Seoul, I had mistakenly assumed that Koreans were almost same as Japanese in many ways. Not only is that wrong, but given the history of occupation and war crimes during WWII (such as comfort women), this kind of prejudice is insulting here. I am quite thankful to having gotten this chance to learn more about Korea, including many outstanding issues behind the glitz of Seoul streets.

What remains true is the relevance of chaebol「재벌」in the society.Chaebol, that literally stands for chae (wealth, property) and bol (clan) is the Korean word used to name the business conglomerates that were borned in the post Korean war period, as outcome of Korean's major industrial programs. With the country in ruins, the Government identified an urgent need to move away from consumer goods and light industries, towards heavy, chemical, and import-substitution industries. These industrial programs funded by the Government brought incredibly fast growth, it also accelerated the monopolistic and oligopolistic concentration of capital and economically profitable activities in the hands of a limited number of conglomerates.

The tremendous growth experienced by the chaebol, was closely tied to the expansion of South Korean exports. The strategy was to produce and export diversity, rather than just one or two products. Innovation was critical, switching from one to the next success:
  • 50s-60s: Wigs and textiles
  • 70s-80s: Heavy, defense and chemical.
  • 90s-...: Electronics and hi-tech
In 2014, Samsung aka the largest chaebol, accounted for 17% of the total economy in South Korea. Samsung is the world largest television, mobile phone, memory chip and semiconductor chip (for PC) in the world - larger than Intel since July 2017. The semiconductor industry is therefore the heartbeat of Korean economy. Interestingly enough, walking around on Sunday we bumped on the following installation.

Can you guess what is it? A white ninja and some weird lady?

Seoul - Our room in Gangnam

Urban Place Gangnam, Seoul serviced apartment
Gangnam backstreets

Focus

Stop sign in Puerto Rico
Sometimes it's good to stop and think...

After these 6 months of travel, I decided to take a week off work:
- Where are you going this time? Somewhere exotic?
- Yes indeed, an unusual place where I'm hardly at... Home.
- Visiting your mum in Zaragoza then? Great!
- No... At MY HOME in Malaga.

I used to hate vacations at home. Simply because we all have a tendency to laze out too much and let time go bye without doing anything meaningful. It's good to relax, but 7 days in a row like this is plain waste of time.

To prevent that, I booked a week at South Dance Experience, the intensive course arranged at my usual dance school - the best in Malaga - Headway Dance Studio. Absolutely an excellent decision. Again, thanks Ale & Juande for arranging this experience. After 30h classes (spread over 6 days) from international choreographers on different styles (mostly Urban, but also Contemporary and Heels) I made new friends and also proved myself that, despite my age doubling 80% of everyone else in the room, I can still withstand this kind of physical and mental intensity.

This week was also refreshing, but in a psychological way. A total disconnection from all pressures and fears that us, 30 year-olds go through - Where do I belong? Am I too old for this? Shouldn't I rather concentrate of "appropriate for my age stuff" like having a baby? Where is my career going? Why am I still in Spain?. A total focus transition back to where it should always be i.e. right now. In life, like in an advanced dance class, blink and you miss it.

Yes, it important to have a plan. Yes, you should steer your life, while making room to enjoy things that make you happy. Even when they seem irrelevant to others (imagine talking to colleagues about my teenage end-of-year dance showcase), if they make you feel good... It's all that matters! This week over dinner with a good friend, we talked about depression and how it hunts "normal people" we know of. This reflection made me realize the therapeutic power of dance, to let go negative emotions, to energise you back to balance. At least, that's what it does for me.

During SDX, Jordy taught us this great choreo on Kylie's "Can't get you out of my head" and Jesus, this class felt like 1000 days of therapy. Guess it brought me back to 2001. The time when my age matched everyone else in the class, when I was thinking what to study in Uni, feeling I could be anything and change the World - at least a little, because everything is possible, as long as you try hard enough. Maybe, I was right then... And it's just time that blurs our eyes and tricks our brain to lose hope because we think "we know how the world works... and that's fairly unlikely to happen"

Lot's of good vibes :)  The right kind of energy  needed to start our summer adventure in Seoul.

Shinjuku hanami

Shinjuku hanami 2017
Light of hope.

Tokyo - Komiya-san's Home「小宮さんの内」in Daikanyama

cute house entrance in Daikanyama neighborhood in Tokyo

Tokyo is the ultimate city, there's nothing beyond.

Tokyo - Previous life snapshots, day one

Shibuya snapshots
2017 started with a lot of travel. Thailand, Indonesia, Thailand (again), China and finally, my beloved Tokyo.

It's been a fortunate week, starting from the lovely weather last and this weekend, through discovering that Monday was National Holiday. Managed to meet some old friends from Japan as well as new friends from Spain, in Japan. Went through a lot of feelings, mostly opting for being alone - some might think it's weird, I tend to isolate myself upon this level of emotional stravaganza.

Tokyo, always in my heart. The top place to visit and live, the city that beats all other, somewhere I dream with coming back to, sooner or later. The place I wish you all to experience as thoroughly as I do. Still, this trip was special. I did not feel "desperate to come back" as I was 2 years ago. I was warmed by the good memories, inside and outside the office, with the many friends we made here, as well as those who dropped by to visit (including our closest family). Places matter yes, but so does the people you share the experience with.

Tokyo is great, but it is not the same without Enrique.

I am about to leave for dinner, flying out tomorrow morning. Next week will be challenging, flying again on Friday. So Iwanted to put these emotions down in writings. Both because it helps me handling them and also in order to remember them well. Here come some snapshots from last Saturday. Shibuya remains as pretty and exciting as we remember it.

Build your own brand

girl in black tom ford glasses

Back on track

industrial bulbs
It's been extremely intermittent posting, but I start to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Not quite sure whether I managed to retain any of the few regular readers I ever had, after such an absence. Just in case, I think I owe you an explanation.

Q4 2015 was a nightmare in many dimensions.

I spent 90 days home alone - as Enrique had to travel to South Africa for work. You can imagine how it is, to go from living with someone for the last 8 years and suddenly having him vanished from your life. On top of that, I had an abnormally busy quarter with several trips to Asia and around Spain, long working hours (typical of the year end) and the extra load of missing his support at home. I was forced to leave Byakko with my parents, as my work trips come along an extremely short notice - sometimes it's confirmed on Monday that I'll be flying out on Saturday - so I cannot risk leaving him alone for a week, as a bengal, he would get depressed.

Those of you who follow me on instagram may know that right after Enrique landed back, we went on a 3 week holiday - which was the first long holiday of 2015, by the way. Then came one weekend in Granada and another in Madrid. So here I am, trying to go back to my routines while handling the anxiety associated with the countdown to "VISA ready" aka day when he'll be shipped back to South Africa, for up to another 90 days. Anyway...

Last fall felt, at some point, like trying to juggle more balls than what I can handle. So I dropped this one. Not really proud about it, ticking at the back of my mind ever since. Leaving trace of my trips, hoping to help others as well as writing down my many neurosis (you can laugh but it's the truth) is important for me. It provides a sense of creative achievement, sanity and nostalgia - when I sometimes sneak back in my own past in this little virtual memoir.

The Pinkprint

I have been compulsively listening to Nicki Minaj since June, simply because we were dancing Shanghai in DFLOW - so I took the chance, to download the whole album on iTunes. I am now a big fan of her Minajesty.

While you may associate her with Anaconda, pink wigs and a big butt, she is a lot more - both as a musician and as a human. Pinkprint is packed of relatable humble inspiring beautiful songs. It was written while she breaking up with her long time boyfriend Safaree Samuels. Nicki used the album as an opportunity to deal with and leave the pain behind "I didn’t want to make an album that was just being fake-happy: I wanted to deal with it, and leave it, and move on, and be real-happy." as she also put it at some point "brokenness leads to beautiful art sometimes and it's OK as long as it inspires people".

Thanks Nicki for being open about it. I am one of the many inspired by your art. Lyrics like Grand Piano or The Crying Game are so real and supportive. Highly recommended to any of you is going through some tough time in life.

Life is too short, don't waste it crying over spilled milk. Start with the man in the mirror, asking him to change his ways. Deal with it, man. Solve it or accept it. Move on. To a new phase in the relationship or a new phase in life (alone).

Felicidades, Dani.

enjoying summer with my besties

order made guipure lace dress and matching Manolo Blahnik sandal

hanami in Shinjuku gyoen
