As the Turkish saying goes "If you’ve killed a cat, you need to build a mosque to be forgiven by God" the root for this cat loving attitude traces back to an Islamic legend, where a cat saved Muhammad from a snake. Cats were Muslim heroes ever since. Just a short walk around Istanbul makes a statement about the extent to which they rule the city.
