Gartner Says Worldwide Mobile Phone Sales Increased 16 Per Cent in 2007

Mobile Phone Industry Expected to Resist Economic Downturn as Majority of Growth Will Come From Emerging Markets

Egham, UK, February 27, 2008

Worldwide sales of mobile phones to end users surpassed 1.15 billion units in 2007, a 16 per cent increase from 2006 sales of 990.9 million, according to Gartner, Inc (see Table 1). Mobile phone sales at the end of the year were consistent with the yearly trend, as fourth quarter sales reached 330 million units.

“Emerging markets, especially China and India, provided much of the growth as many people bought their first phone,” said Carolina Milanesi, research director for mobile devices at Gartner, based in Egham, UK. “In mature markets, such as Japan and Western Europe, consumers’ appetite for feature-laden phones was met with new models packed with TV tuners, global positioning satellite (GPS) functions, touch screens and high-resolution cameras.”

“After another strong year, we expect the growth in sales of mobile devices to end users will decelerate in 2008 and fall to about 10 per cent growth as mature markets become more saturated,” added Ms Milanesi. “However, the global mobile devices market will remain relatively immune to a recession in the US and Western European economies as the majority of growth in 2008 will come from emerging markets. The mature Western Europe and North America markets are driven by operator contract terms and replacement cycles and will account for just 30 per cent of the global mobile devices market in 2008.”

Nokia achieved its long-term target of 40 per cent market share in the fourth quarter of 2007 when it sold slightly more than 133 million phones across the world (see Table 2). Despite some component shortages, Nokia increased its market share sequentially in all regions except North America, which remains a challenging market for the vendor. In emerging markets, products such as the 1110, the 1600 and the 2630 were in demand by consumers, while in mature markets such as Western Europe high-end phones like the N95, N82 and N73 were sought-after devices. In 2008, Nokia will need to continue to improve its portfolio, offering not only more applications and functions, but also novel designs and improved user interfaces.

In the fourth quarter of 2007, Samsung maintained second position, and although its market share slipped slightly, the gap widened between it and third-placed Motorola. Its success relied on its Ultra and Ultra II family of products. In 2008, Samsung needs to diversify its portfolio further with more form factors and colours so that single products stand out from the overall line-up.

The problems that beset Motorola in the third quarter of 2007 continued through the fourth quarter, and it recorded sales of 39 million phones across the world, taking 11.9 per cent of the market. It retained second place in terms of annual sales to end users in 2007, largely thanks to the inventory it disposed of in the first half of the year. Nevertheless, the extent of Motorola's troubles can be seen in the 9.7 percentage-points market-share drop in its fourth quarter of 2007 result from the same period in 2006.

Sony Ericsson ended 2007 with another positive performance, growing its market share on a quarterly basis to 9.0 per cent from 8.7 per cent. Its Cyber-shot and Walkman products, such as the K850i, K610i, W910i, K550i and W300i, remained popular among consumers around the world. As Sony Ericsson widens its reach, adding features such as Wi-Fi and GPS, as well as more low-tier products, it will stay competitive in the coming quarters.

LG’s mobile phone sales totalled 23.5 million units in the fourth quarter of 2007, maintaining its 7.1 per cent market share despite the increase of more than three million in sales volumes. The success of the Viewty, the Venus and the Voyager helped LG gain brand awareness across the world as well as improve its margins. Ms Milanesi commented: “In 2008, LG will need to continue strengthening its high-end portfolio for mature markets as well as its mid tier. In the low tier, LG will increasingly be challenged by vendors such as ZTE, which has already been eroding its market share in key markets such as India.”

The market saw three new entrants into the top ten in the fourth quarter of 2007. These vendors included Research In Motion (RIM), ZTE and Apple. “On one hand, we have aggressive pricing and a focus on emerging markets (ZTE), and on the other, RIM with targeted functions and Apple with brand and design,” said Ms Milanesi.

“Phone manufacturers need to continuously adapt their portfolios to respond to operators' demands for open platforms, lower pricing and more personalisation,” recommended Ms Milanesi. They should also try to meet consumers' desires for fashionable, easy-to-use phones.”

Regional Analysis
In Asia/Pacific, 112 million mobile devices were sold in the fourth quarter of 2007, representing 9.6 per cent growth over the previous quarter. Over the holiday season, operators and distributors offered a wide range of mobile phone options at reasonable prices, tempting new users to sign up to service plans. “Driving factors for growth in emerging markets in Asia/Pacific included huge numbers of new subscribers, lower-priced phones based on wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA) technology, as well as ultra-low-cost CDMA phones and low-cost global system for mobile (GSM) phones,” said Ann Liang, Gartner principal research analyst for mobile terminals, based in Taipei.

Sales in the Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa region remained strong in the fourth quarter of 2007 and reached 61.8 million units. Mobile operators continued to add new subscribers to their networks, especially in Africa where countries such as Nigeria, Egypt, Algeria and South Africa saw healthy net new additions.

In Japan, sales to end users numbered 12.5 million units in the fourth quarter of 2007, a decrease of 3.6 per cent year-on-year. Strong sales in the early part of the year brought total sales in 2007 to a record high of 52.3 million units — more than in 2003, when many Japanese bought their first camera phones. “In 2007, music player functions and embedded TV-tuners with large, high-resolution displays persuaded users to replace their devices,” said Nahoko Mitsuyama, principal analyst for mobile communications research at Gartner, based in Tokyo.

In Latin America, sales reached 38.8 million units in the fourth quarter of 2007, a 12.5 per cent increase from the same period in 2006. “In December, the holiday season, along with accompanying promotions, meant sales hit a new record level,” said Tuong Nguyen, analyst for mobile terminals at Gartner, based in Arlington, Virginia.

The fourth quarter of 2007 was another record quarter in North America, as sales to end users continued at a rapid pace, reaching 49 million units, an increase of 9.2 per cent from the fourth quarter of 2006. “AT&T and Verizon Wireless continued to be the strongest performing operators, while Sprint Nextel lagged,” said Hughes De La Vergne, principal analyst for mobile terminals research at Gartner, based in Dallas, Texas.

“Replacement devices continued to dominate sales and growth in new subscribers slowed down as penetration rates climbed.”

In the fourth quarter of 2007, mobile phone sales in Western Europe totalled 55 million units, up 2 per cent from the fourth quarter of 2006. Features such as music players, GPS and cameras proved to be significant attractions. In the same quarter, operators in Germany, the United Kingdom and France introduced Apple's long-awaited iPhone to the market. Although sales have been small, this iconic device renewed consumers' interest in high-end phones, which in most Western European markets are still heavily subsidised by operators.

Siempre estarás conmigo.

Muerte por fallo renal {1993/05- 2008/02/25, 18:00}

- No tenía suficientes referencias?

"Celebrity endorsement transfers the personality and status of the celebrity as successful, wealthy, and distinctive directly to the brand. Other personality attributes that the celebrity may have such as glamour, beauty, talent, and style will also be ultimately linked with the brand. This factor however appears to a lesser extent among luxury brands than consumer brands because luxury brands already have well-defined and strong brand personalities."

"Endorsement by celebrities helps to position and re-position existing brands."

"According to recent research statistics, the number of celebrity advertisements has doubled in the past ten years. One in four adverts features celebrities now as opposed to one in eight in 1995. Although this statistic is related to consumer goods and services, there has also been an increase in the use of celebrities in the brand message communications among luxury brands."

Luxury Brands & Celebrities: An Enduring Brand Romance, Uche Okonkwo, 2006

Jon Burgerman. Sixty Hotel

Still stuck on the Sixty SpA project, now with the Branded Energizers, like the Sixty Hotel quoting myself...

I

naugurated in Riccione, 2006, the hotel is the first of a chain, the ultimate “artistic, design and fashion experience!”[1]. Pushing out the envelope, the hotel goes beyond its walls and brings life to the brand experience, enhancing clarity of the message and energy for the brands, creating new customer touch-points, to develop loyalty by actual lifestyle branding. However, products are also sold inside, a cost-effective short-term revenue generating alternative which might lead to negative spillover effects on the customer’s perception of brand honesty, damaging the loyalty development process. It might be wiser just to build brand experience within its walls and let the brand drive the customer afterwards: “Brand from the shelf, start by building loyalty and let the shopper chose you” [8]

The co-branded initiative is the constellation 30 young emerging artists’ work from all around the world, a physical statement of the brand identity of the Fashion Brands (see section 2.1): Premium – **** top class services, personal - 70s stylized, innovation – via the “ever-changing façade, a screen for video projections”3.

And that was I doing, when a room just bumped over the rest, the one designed by Jon Burgerman, quite interesting guy I'd say. So if you're bored, nothing else to do... Give it a shot and take some cool screensavers and wallpapers ^_^

Bourgogne, Pinot Noir.

Louis Jadot. Couvent Des Jacobins.

Sólo una botella de vino? Well... Not exactly.

Mil besitos a tod@s y feliz finde!

Recall = 0; Image = 1.

A veces...

Pero Stockholms Universitetet is different.

{Aclaración: En Suecia, no pagas la Universidad, las clases públicas son TOTALMENTE gratis y cualquiera, estudiando o trabajando tiene acceso a ellas. Los estudiantes reciben ayudas del estado, por ser estudiantes y por estar independizados - que no se devuelven - y tienen además la opción de completar sus ingresos con el studiemedel, un préstamo del Estado que se devuelve una vez finalizados los estudios y comenzada la vida laboral. Parece genial, pero como te pase como a Kalle, mi vecino de corridor, que empezó ingeniería, no le gustaba y se cambió... Te puedes meter en préstamos de 8 años, que no son tan insignificantes}

A ver qué encuentro hoy....

Generation MySpace Is Getting Fed Up

The boom isn't booming anymore.
Less time on social networking sites or signing off altogether.
Fed up with advertising? It's the time to express yourself through a blog

Where you can actually choose whether you want to have ads on.

Think I'm a kind of extreme user.
I soon became bored of Facebook - A month was more than enough for me of superpokes, groups and forwarded requests. I recognize its useful applications, to share pictures, send messages and plan events. But that's all I like about it.

Poder, querer...

Iconos londinenses, junto a mi Dani - of course.

Me encantó.

A bit more 'bout it...

Casual Friday

So here am I.

9AM.

With the happy face that skipping the compulsory Sensor's LaB - with Mark's permission, of course - for going instead to the Brand Portfolio Mgt. lecture. Today, a couple of Branding Leaders focused on implementing Global Corporate Branding Strategies for 3M are coming!

Marker-Dispensers and Green - Environmentally Friendly - Post-Its (the brand new product of the season) are the tangible and less important of what I've gotten from them.

Lots of knowledge, from business strategy to packaging design, from corporate leveraging to the correct use of typography... The way they work is just amazing.

Really happy about the choice!!!

And this is Stockholms Universitetet.

The real one.
Close home, close Frescati and closed with curtains?? Well, they will only last until 12:30.

Much nicer, huh? ;D

At least until 16:45, 20' later the sunset, when I left home, on the way to the laundry, some household cleaning, training and phoning - today is Jaime's 6th B'Day and I'm here :_(

Late dinner, later customization and fear for tomorrow's task: The Human Factors Engineering's Hemtenta.

Now I got it translated into English - thanks for helping me with the Svenska - I think I can manage... Hope so, at least.

About us & the blog.

Zaragoza (my hometown in Spain, December 2007)

"You can only connect them looking backwards, so you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future"

This is the first picture of this blog. But not quite the point how my internet story started. As I teenager, like everyone else in the early 2000s, I had my own fotolog site - which was the popularity contest when Facebook hadn't even started. But at some point, I felt I wanted to do something different, that fulfilled my expression needs in a much wider way than a picture a day.

So right after moving to Stockholm(Sweden) as an ERASMUS student, to finish my MsC on Telecommunications Engineering, I created the blog. As a way of keeping my parents updated, logging my everyday life and sharing my concerns about adult life and the future, which in the time was really mean to be the answer to the question: What's gonna happen after getting the degree done?

Many things happened. I received a grant to continue my PhD studies and redirect my career into IT Product Development Strategy from the Princess of Spain. I went through a short life crisis and felt I was meant to be an architect, a web designer or something on that line. But after a while, I realized I needed a job to get by and luckily got the opportunity that changed my life, at the best company to work for.

There, I learnt a lot on the state-of-the-art products that “innovate to empower people, business and society”. In short, how technology can actually make this world better. But also realized that working for a corporation is much more about human communication, words and mutual understanding than one could initially expect. Living in Sweden, gave me the time (and bucks) to travel around, with and without work all over the world: Asia, Europe, US & quickly Africa.

Throughout my contributions to standardization, I have met guys from pretty much anywhere in the world. Working, discussing, enjoying the cities we visit with them made me realize that, more than anything, I'm interested in people and how understanding cultural differences is an effective tool to understand why we think the way we do, grow into ourselves, see life through a different angle and learn to appreciate experiences in a much deeper way.

Along this way, I did some amateur modeling - for a friend, run two half-marathons and made my life dream true in May 2011, with a trip to Japan with my significant other. This trip changed our reality, as it opened up the door to becoming expat employees in Tokyo. We got married differently, at the Spanish Ground in Stockholm. A week later, just after my 27th B'Day, we packed our life in boxes & kicked off a new reality in Shibuya, the beating teen heart of Tokyo. After climbing Mt Fuji, I felt philosophical.

Here's my bottom line.

There is a big economic crisis going on right now. Things change suddenly but like when an Earthquake (地震) or Typhoon (台風) hits we can do nothing except trying to be prepared. Always remember, that nobody can steal your knowledge, your experiences or network of contacts. What you know, who your friends are, will always be there to help you and grow naturally as long as you keep nurturing it. If there's no opportunity in your home country, don't be afraid and leave! Expat life can be quite interesting and really, jobs are somewhere out there,  waiting for you. Draw your own way, find a reason to smile everyday.

I always say that I believe in karma because, in an abstract sense, what you give is what you get. Help people, be curious, don't fear, reach out, open up. The World will bring back more than you expected, people you find along the way will be awesome and the experiences will teach you more than any book or class. As Enrique always tells me, life is too short to be sad.

*If you are wondering about he weird name of the blog "dontplayahate" (it used to be dontplayahate-congratulate) here's the story. In Stockholm, I used to buy V magazine. That came always with WINKing girls on cover and funny titles like "don't playa hate, congratulate" or "are you the rabbit or the headlight?".

The thing is, I liked this one. It is an old hip-hop motto from Ice T "don't hate the playa, hate the game" that somehow diverged into "don't playa (meaning player) hate, congratulate". It's actually the same as Ghandi stated, "Hate the sin and love the sinner." which in turn means, what I always believed...

People are good by nature. They want to do good, be liked and kind to others. However, shit happens sometimes turning people into assholes. So you should not dislike someone for their actions, consider instead the situation that causes it.
