Valentine's Day in Japan

14th February. Valentine's Day.

All over the world, people celebrate love. Boyfriends buy flowers, prepare surprise dinners while girlfriends get pretty inside out. From red lace to red lips, it's all about love and a big chunk of consumerism.

However, in Japan things are usually massive in a slight different way. Here, it's the women who only give away chocolates. As a woman, you give chocolate twice. Honmei Choko (本命チョコ) is more expensive (think Godiva) and goes to your lover. Giri Choko (義理チョコ) is a cheaper gesture to your boss or colleagues. The best of all is that 14th March. Date for Howaito Dee (ホワイトデー ) which means white day, where women who gave chocolates get the triple return (sambai gaeshi 三倍返し) on white jewelry, white lingerie, white chocolate or marshmallows.

I got some Ghiardelli chocolates in Texas, took them to the office and killed two birds in one shot. The Giri choko and the sweets that we all bring after a trip. Good for me, got roses as love surprise. After a week sitting in Texas, I'd better stay away from all things sweet. At least, the edible ones.

San Valentín se celebra en Japón de una manera especial. Las mujeres son las únicas que compran chocolate, tanto a sus colegas como a su amado. Así que es tradicional aparecer con una caja de dulces en la oficina y sorprender con algo más exquisito, a tu amado salaryman. La cosa no termina aquí, pues como con el Karma, recibes lo que das por triplicado. Con un mes de retraso, eso sí. El 14 de Marzo, se celebra el día Blanco, en el que se obsequia a quienes regalaron con detalles en el color perfecto, desde lencería a joyas, pasando por chocolate o malvaviscos. 

Estas fechas me dan por pensar. En lo que imaginas y lo que termina siendo el amor, de verdad. No hay grandes dramas, ni pasiones novelescas. Sólo dependencia mutua, tan invisible e indispensable como el aire que te permite respirar. Los baches, mayores o menores, te terminan por reforzar. Pues no hay convivencia sin algún malentendido y en aprender día a día, se esconde la prosperidad. Así que con los pies en la tierra, dejemos que ese rayo de luz esporádico inunde de magia nuestra realidad.
