Completely unrelated pic - I don't eat sugar and this is mostly about fashion, but still SO CUTE ^_^
Malls are something which we are not exactly short of in Bangkok. Sukhumvit road is lined up with super fancy super huge super glassy complexes which would take days to visit thoroughly. With so much variety, it's confusing to know where to go, but for us seasoned locals... It´s another story!
Disclaimer: I am not fond of street markets. I don't do counterfeit. I hate bargaining, not getting a chance to try on clothes and overall, I can't stand that feeling of being tricked - which I more often than not get on the street stalls where us whitetrash seem to appear like walking cash registers to some vendors. I give you one example, the Cult Gaia copycat original retails at 150USD, similar versions are sold at 25EUR in Chatuchak - very similar price to what you can find in Europe a friend told me... Similar experience I had with the Lanna style embroidered bag, which I ended up buying in Fuengirola (Málaga) for half the price one of the street vendors was asking #truestory.
Here come my favourite spots and brands in Bangkok (so far!) - this is for you, visiting this summer!
1. EmQuartier (BTS Phrom Phong)
New and upscale mall which I find very easy to navigate (in contrast to Central World WHERE I ALWAYS GET LOST trying to find MUJI). I always go there on Sundays, after my dance class, I buy a coconut smoothie here and take a walk. It is located right beside soi 39, where my dance school is. This is a very interesting area to me as most of the residents are Japanese. There are many great Japanese restaurants in the streets nearby and the mall has a huge Roppongi vibe which I love. Another plus is that it just takes a 5min walk to go to Casa Pagoda hands down best interior design in town.
From Cinemas to the lovely open rooftop bar pictured below, here you can find a branch of Hamburger Studio - my absolute #1 beloved Thai brand, a not-so-transited Anastasia Beverly Hills - where you can get great brows for 1000THB and with great I mean BOLD b**ch on LA style, a trustworthy dentist - right in front of Anastasia branch, where you can get a Philipps Zoom Whitening on a Sunday for 8000THB, and many other things which you can explore by yourself. You can also cross to the other side, where EmPorium awaits with more high fashion grandeur - meaning Gucci. Both located side to side from BTS station.
They always have something going on in the inner space, just like they do around Roppongi Hills.
Despite my face, I was super happy with my new acquisition.
Thumbs up for these brows
My dentist of choice - lovely service, pure white!
Then you can go upstairs for a casual meal or cocktail, at the Escape space. If you are feeling active, there are some junping, come close to the cinemas and check out Bounce!
If there was a price for worst poser, I would win no doubt, even the child behind beats me.
2. Terminal21 (BTS Asok)
Interesting concept of an airport inspired mall, where different floors are mapped to World capitals. Terminal21 reminds of the shopping in Seoul's Dongdaemum, sickening variety, air conditioning, great bang-for-the-back and prices written upfront. One and a half years have gone by and I still like / wear Doth Bangkok clothes, specially the cute little crops combined with pants or the silk blouses. Very Thai office-style.
There is one floor dedicated to men, where my local guy-friends-with-style do quite a bit of shopping!
We didn't shoot all the crazy things inside this mall, so you have some surprises.
Bit of escalator labyrinth
Guarding the entrance, it is located in Tokyo's floor stall 1084-5 according to their facebook page
3. Siam Square (BTS Siam)
Instead of exiting the station to the side where Siam Paragon and other big malls are, take the stairs on the opposite side and dare to walk between stalls until you drop. I have found very interesting Gucci inspired everything (great for slightly EXTRA dance class clothes), extremely cheap glasses, jewellery and high quality men shoes, among other things.
As it is more of a collection of stalls than an actual mall, I leave you a pin to the Hamburger Studio branch because most of the interesting stalls are in the parallel streets, so if you can't miss them if you walk from the station to the pin.
