Despite picking warm locations as main vacation destination, we are not really beach lizards - neither can stand lying during hours doing absolutely nothing. We chose tropical locations because they open up for tropical hiking, amazing jungles, temples, water sports or diving. Of course sometimes we take a nap under the sun, but by no means is that the center of our vacation. Having said so, we explored the beaches of Curaçao trying to find the hidden gems.
The south of the island was rather disappointing. It didn't really feel like Paradise and it didn't feel like vacation spot either. Some beaches had huge scary boats anchored like 100m away from the shore. So you didn't feel like swimming or even staying.

Right...?
But the North West of Curaçao, boy that's another story... So here's a quick summary of our top 3 beaches.

#3 Playa Lagun - and the many small beaches nearby
The coastline between the Northwest tip of the island and Willemstad is pack with different beaches, surrounded by cliffs and greenery it's quite rough but unforgettable. Some of them have bars, some of them are pretty empty so make sure to pack drinks and beach umbrellas.
#2 Playa Kalki
Located right where Kura Hulanda Lodge is - the hotel belongs to the same guy who owns the amazing Museum we talked about - it's small but cute. The iguanas and the colorful bar make it a perfect spot to spend the day. Even if you are somewhat restless like us, it's enjoyable, promised.
#1 Porto Mari
Ironically close to Willemstad, this was our favourite. It's possible to snorkel, to rent a sunbed, have a mojito or sleep under a coconut palm - all in this amazing place. It's more crowded, has more kids than Playa Kalki, but still highly recommended when you leave the city for a beach detour in Curaçao.
